Ville Platte Police Officer Tammy Bonnette enjoyed visiting with the children that attended the department’s safety seat and seat belt checkpoint at Champagne’s Grocery Saturday afternoon. While Bonnette visited and discussed seat belt usage, Sgt. Linton Fontenot checked the installation of infant seats and booster seats to make sure they were properly installed. He adjusted some seats and showed parents how to secure their infant seats correctly in place. Children enjoyed hot dogs, chips and drinks supplied by generous donors in the community. A few children were unsure of the officers and Bonnette quickly made friends and in some cases, like above, got a hug. Venita “Neicy” Doucet, grant director, said the department used grant monies to conduct this safety seat inspection. She encouraged parents who were not able to stop by the checkpoint to call the police department for an appointment. She said citations will not be given in this case, and the proper installation will be discussed of these types of seats. She said the department will continue to pursue grants like this one to help educate the public in safety matters. She thanked everyone who assisted in the safety checkpoint. Officers ran errands and staff members prepared and served the food.
