Louisiana State Police Troop I is currently investigating two separate accidents which occurred Saturday around 6:40 a.m. in the same area on LA 97 just north of LA 98, near Garber Farm.

According to state police, Timothy Lowry, 28, of Jennings, was operating a 1997 Nissan pick-up truck which was traveling south on LA 97. The Lowry vehicle crossed the center line hitting head-on with a northbound Ford Mustang being driven by Hayward Labbe Jr., 41, of Lake Charles.

Lowry and a passenger in his pick-up truck, Alicia Fruge, 27, of Jennings, both died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

Following the head-on crash, Lowry’s vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane, facing north-east. The Labbe vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane, facing west.

Sometimes after the first crash, a southbound 2000 Peterbilt tractor trailer struck the passenger side of the Labbe vehicle.

Labbe’s car was pushed approximately 150 feet before stopping on the northbound shoulder of the roadway.

Labbe died from injuries sustained in the accident; however, it is unknown which collision killed him.

The driver of the tractor trailer was William Ratcliff, Jr., 26 of Basile.

Investigating the two accidents are Senior Troopers Arnold Hanks and Donald McFarlan.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office, Evangeline Volunteer Fire Department, Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Department and Acadian EMS.

Also, on Friday, January 9, 2008, State Police – Troop I arrested a Lafayette man on vehicular homicide charges, that stem from a April 2008 fatal crash.

Troop I investigated a head-on fatal crash that occurred on LA 13 and LA 374 that claimed the life of sixty-two-year old Felix Shillow of Mamou, La. Twenty-nine year old Joseph Cashen crossed the center line and struck the vehicle Shillow was in head-on. A urine test was taken from Cashen, on the day of the crash and sent to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Troop I received the toxicology results January 7, 2009, indicating that Cashen had illegal narcotics in his system on the day of the crash.

Troopers obtained an arrest warrant and arrested Cashen at his residence in Lafayette without incident. Cashen was later booked into Evangeline Parish Jail on one count of vehicular homicide, two counts of vehicular negligent injuring, DWI 2nd Offense and Driving left of Center.
