GRAND COUTEAU – A woman whose relatives described as “a good mother who would have never done anything to hurt her children” is under arrest for intentionally running her 11-year-old child down with her SUV in Grand Couteau this past weekend.

According to authorities, Sandra Reina Joseph, a former Lafayette Police Officer with no criminal history, has admitted to intentionally running over her child, Samuel Udomeh. No motive or explanation has yet to be given for her actions.

“I met with the lady’s family today, her mother, father and brother, and they are very disturbed,” said St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. “Anytime a mother takes her own child’s life, there is a possibility of mental issues. I think that is the case here.”

Authorities were called to a rural area just outside Grand Couteau at 9:15 Saturday morning. Upon arrival, they found Samuel’s body on the ground beside a farm building about 100 yards from the road.

Joseph is currently being held at the St. Landry Parish Jail without bond.
