An additional charge of vehicular manslaughter has been filed against a Church Point driver following the death of a passenger in his vehicle.

Victor Houston, 51, died at Opelousas General Hospital on May 28, from injuries he sustained in a crash on Sunday, May 9, on La 35 south of Lawtell.

The driver, Fracisco Aicala, 25, was earlier charged with DWI, reckless operation, vehicular negligent injuring, no driver’s license and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Prior to the crash, Aicala’s vehicle was traveling southbound on La 35. The driver failed to negotiate a curve to the left and traveled off the right side of the roadway, according to Trooper Chris Leday.

The vehicle struck a culvert and then flipped over, ejecting all occupants. It was later discovered that a fourth ejected passenger, Lillia Abundiz, fled the accident scene on foot. She was later picked up by a relative and brought home.
