“You can see it in the kids eyes when they come in here,” said manager Melissa “Misty” Guidry. “When they come in to buy supplies for school they realize it’s for real.”
Public schools report on Friday, August 13th. The irony of that date wasn’t lost on Guidry.
“Yeah, it is a Friday the 13th,” she laughed.
During an afternoon visit Friday, Guidry detailed all of the conveniences that her store had to offer. For example, a parent who is pressed for time can simply call in and tell her what grade and school that their child is about to begin. Guidry already has the list for all public schools in the parish and will pack the order and deliver it if necessary. They will even custom package the supplies to fit a boy or a girl.
Among the different supplies available are their desk ‘caddies’ which fit around a students chair and are capable of holding a students books, pens, pencils and other supplies. They are made in Crowley.
“The caddies are made by my and Donielle’s (Assistant Store Manager Donielle Baudoin) mothers,” said Guidry. “We like to make sure people know that when they buy these they are shopping locally, supporting Crowley.”
The caddies can be decorated by the students with the different decorations that Teacher’s Pet has in stock.
“I am fortunate in that we have over 150 years of experience in this store,” she added.
One of the more interesting people Guidry talked about is a man named Wayne DeJean who has been with them for over 40 years.
“Everyone knows Mr. Wayne,” she said. “He is so talented. We had a woman come in here with a 30-year-old typewriter and she needed a new ribbon for it. Mr. Wayne simply went upstairs to his supplies and got one for her.”
Guidry also showed off her Kindermats which are sold to small students who take naps during the school day. They are quite capable of fitting one sleeping student and are designed for both boys and girls.
“We have camoflage for the boys and . . . now that I think about it most of the girls like the camoflage too,” she smiled.
